Yusuke Urameshi is a hardass teen delinquent that loves skipping classes, smoking cigarettes, disrespecting authority and throwing hands with the toughest gangs in the halls and on the streets. One of my big reading goals for the new year is to read a bunch of my childhood favorite manga for the first time in nearly 20 years to relive the nostalgia and see how they hold up. More than anything else I can say about this series, I don't want my time with these characters to end. The heart and charm of this story go a great ways toward covering for where it lacks in other areas.

It's charming characters and their consistent writing give the series a charm all its own, which has completely won me over.

But somewhere along the way, I've fallen in love with Yu Yu Hakusho.

Even through the Dark Tournament arc, I continued to be a bit hard on it. Since volume 3, I have been very critical of this series. Otherwise, this is a great action volume with well earned drama and stakes. Great action volume with well earned drama and stakes. But I bit more time in the oven would have benefited him. As it is now, he only feels a tad under developed, so it's not a big deal. I would also like to hear him talk more about the effect Chapter Black had on him. I wish we had some more time to explore his character (especially his relationship to Koenma and parallels with Yusuke). eventually decays into the desire to fight, period." "The desire to fight for a cause, and to fight for others. The panel where Sensui is telling Yusuke his role as a Reikai Tantei will ruin his soul, while Sensui is depicted featureless save for mouth and ears, is cool as fuck. "Imagine a cute little girl who believes babies come from the stork, growing up to be in porno movies. To be honest, I feel like it's just there because Togashi is ticking a box for "obligatory transformation" in shounen battle manga, and he couldn't well have had Sensui transform his body like Toguro did, so armor it is. I used to think Sensui's spirit-armor was silly, but I guess I'm more tolerant of it now. I actually never really had an issue with Yusuke's demonic atavism, as it explains how he was so strong throughout the series, and we already had Toguro Otouto claim parallels between himself and Yusuke in their big battle a few volumes ago. "Shinbou" doesn't act terribly different from what we see of "Minoru" in combat, seemingly having only Seikouki as a difference, when the story could just as easily have "Minoru" decide it's time to get "serious" and pull out Seikouki as a last resort to defeat Yusuke. Kazuya's main thing is his Space Adventure Cobra gun-arm, which fills a role that could just as easily be handled by having Sensui use a Reigan - all he does is shoot Yusuke to surprise him, then torment him a bit, and it would be enough of a "shock" for Sensui to use the Reikai Tantei's signature move against him. Sensui has seven personalities, but we only "see" Minoru, Kazuya, and Shinobu. The personalities remind of Shyamalan's film, Split, which obviously came out over twenty years later, but which similarly goes over-the-top with the number of the villain's personalities, when it should be "enough" to have a smaller amount that's still more than one. And of course you have that whole thing with Yusuke at the end. Then he is revealed to have Seikouki, holy energy. His "true" self, Shinobu, is able to seemingly absorb the other personalities, re-complete the whole, making it feel like the whole "Kazuya" thing was just a gag. One of his personalities has a gun built into his arm. So Sensui has seven personalities because of the stress of single-handedly working as a Reikai Tantei ten years ago and fighting loads of tough demons. But Sensui keeps getting shit added to him that makes everything more and more ridiculous, little of which is "necessary," or at least things could have been handled a bit differently rather than this avalanche of "twists." This arc has ramped up significantly, to the point of an oncoming apocalypse, very much in line with what one would expect of an "endgame" scenario for a story (making Three Kings more like a "post-game".?). Yeah, I don't know it's kind of clear Togashi was ready to move on from Yu Yu Hakusho.
